WHAT: The public library in Trenton, New Jersey has become the latest to install an automated DVD dispenser (which works like a Redbox kiosk). The free, self-service machine lets users choose from some 2,000 titles, most of which are geared towards adults since the librarians expect that children will still want to browse.
SO WHAT: The library defended the $66,000 dispenser by citing that 55% of its circulation last month consisted of DVDs - and the dispenser would increase efficiency. People might be concerned about the reduced human interaction that comes with this. But convenience is crucial to library usage, and self-service kiosks do offer increased privacy.
